The extravagant parties and star-studded performances that have surrounded Miami’s Art Basel concluded last weekend, with performances by Rosalia, Lizzo, Cardi B, and rocker Lenny Kravitz.
The yearly event, which was canceled last year because to the pandemic, is an extension of Switzerland’s famed art display. However, Miami has put its own spin on the event, which has become a celebrity magnet over the years. Rihanna, Kim Kardashian, Kanye West, and Joe Jonas were all photographed out and about.
The highlight of the week was Louis Vuitton’s first-ever fashion presentation in the United States on Tuesday. However, the extravagant event, in which attendees were carried to an island by private yacht, became an emotional memorial after famed 41-year-old designer Virgil Abloh died unexpectedly only days before the presentation. Kid Cudi and Erykah Badu performed at an after-party where dozens of dancing red drones illuminated the skyline to spell out “Virgil was here.”
Models Karlie Kloss and Candice Swanepoel, as well as Camila Coelho, A$AP Ferg, and Meadow Walker, attended a party sponsored by Burberry and W magazine.
Rosalia surprised fans on Friday night with a surprise performance in honor of Chanel’s classic scent. The French fashion business collaborated with artist Es Devlin to create a multisensory sculptural installation including a forest of over 1,000 plants and trees. Chanel threw a special dinner before the event, which was attended by Pharrell Maluma, Leon Bridges, Joe Jonas, and singer sister group HAIM.
The Five Echoes installation by the fashion company is free and available to the public until December 21.
Cardi B performed on Saturday night to promote her new vodka-infused whipped cream brand. At The Goodtime Hotel, the rapper blasted Whipshots into the mouths of fans. Among those in attendance were Offset, Mary J. Blige, and Timbaland. Following the event, Cardi B and Offset went to Hyde Beach at SLS South Beach for the MAXIM party, where the duo danced to 112’s old-school classic “Peaches and Cream.” Karrueche Tran, Austin Mahone, and Taye Diggs were also there.
Over 500 people waited for hours in line around the block to get into rapper Meek Mill’s sold-out event at E11EVEN. It wasn’t until 3:30 a.m. that he took the stage. Cardi B, Leonardo DiCaprio, Nina Agdal, Karrueche, Migos, and Marshmello were among those who stayed for the late-night show.
According to a statement, the official Art Basel festival drew 60,000 attendees this year, but many more visited different art shows throughout the week. A $4 million Banksy sale, a 10-year-old superstar painter, and an 18 carat gold bagel avocado toast for $2.9 million at Galerie Rother all caused excitement at Art Miami.
The ultra-futuristic Paramount Miami Worldcenter even collaborated with artist Mr. Glue to stage a scavenger hunt for street rubbish that had been converted into priceless artworks.
In a time when art frequently borders on the ludicrous — remember the notorious $120,000 banana duct tape pieces? — Miami’s DJ Khaled dropped “bling wings” coated with 24-karat gold dust and edible diamonds to advertise his restaurant.
Swizz Beatz collaborated with American Express to bring back “Women in Art,” commissioning a live installation by artist Tanda Francis for a Saturday night event. Lizzo also gave a special concert at The Miami Beach Edition for the credit card firm.
Dr. Deepak Chopra collaborated with “Game of Thrones” actress Emilia Clarke for an intimate morning meditation to promote his Metaverse For Good platform and NFT release. Alicia Keys also led a guided meditation at night, during which mechanical flowers suspended from the ceiling opened and closed like inhales and exhales. The Grammy winner performed songs from her new album, which will be released next week, while dressed in a vibrant yellow gown and thigh high boots at Superblue, Miami’s experience art center.
DiCaprio, Marc Anthony, Soleil Moon Frye, and Alicia Machado joined DiCaprio and Marc Anthony in raising $1.6 million for Penn’s CORE foundation (Community Organized Relief Effort), specifically its crisis response programs in Latin America, including Haiti and Brazil, at a fundraiser Thursday night.
Along with Venus and Serena Williams and Latin boy band CNCO, DiCaprio attended art collector Wayne Boich’s yearly gala. Kravitz performed a 75-minute show. Rapper T.I. brought the party to a conclusion.
Playboy also joined in on the game to advertise its new lifestyle brand BIG BUNNY. Cardi B, Lizzo, and Charlie XCX were among the guests at a surrealist gala based on the premise that pleasure is a fundamental human right. The new collection honors artist Salvador Dal, who was commissioned by the magazine between 1973 and 1974.
Across town, actress Eva Longoria served as mixologist at a party to promote her new brand Casa Del Sol tequila on Friday night, pouring cocktails for guests including longtime pal Serena Williams.
On Saturday night, rapper Young Thug and DJ Von Dutch hosted an NFT party in Miami’s trendy Wynwood District.
Maroon 5’s Adam Levine and wife Victoria Secret Angel Behati Prinsloo were also spotted with buddy Marc Anthony at David Grutman and Pharrell’s restaurant Swan. Rauw Alejandro and Rosalia had a romantic night there as well.
Vera Wang, who wore a bespoke grey silk Vera gown, dined at the restaurant with fellow fashion designer Donna Karen and Giancarlo Stanton. Diplo, the record producer and DJ, paid a visit to the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science with his family and friends.
