10 Novels That Were Turned Into Amazing Movies

As part of our new Page Turners reading club, we recently invited members of the New Yorkers Community to tell us about their favorite novels that have been made into films. Here are some of their recommendations:

1. The Princess Bride by William Goldman

“It’s likely that the fact that the author then created the script is why both are so wonderful.” You don’t lose anything crucial by swapping, but when you read the book, the insight you receive into the characters and their backstories is remarkable and truly rounds out the image.”

It’s available through Amazon for $4.49+, Barnes & Noble for $8.95+, or a local bookstore via IndieBound here.

2. Room by Emma Donoghue

“I remember worrying that the film would not do the book credit, yet it was done so wonderfully.” “Everything I imagined while I read Room was exactly how it looked in the film.”

It’s available through Amazon for $7.99+, Barnes & Noble for $13.83+, or a local bookstore via IndieBound here.

3. Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier

“I was delighted by how close Hitchcock stayed to the novel (particularly given the liberties he took with The Birds).”

Purchase it from Amazon for $7.23+, Barnes & Noble for $7.99+, or a local bookstore via IndieBound here.

4. The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Steven Chbosky

“Steven Chbosky, the book’s author, also authored the script and directed the film, so it’s no surprise that the film captures the tone of the book flawlessly.” It’s open and honest about the true challenges of adolescence while still being nostalgic, appealing, and somewhat escapist. Aside from Harry Potter, this is arguably the single work that has had the biggest impact on me.”

Purchase it from Amazon for $8.39+, Barnes & Noble for $9.44+, or a local bookstore via IndieBound here.

5. Life of Pi by Yann Martel

“I felt the movie was absolutely wonderful, and the book was great!” “I liked seeing how folks who hadn’t watched the film reacted to the surprising developments.”

It’s available at Amazon for $9.99+, Barnes & Noble for $10.45+, or a local bookstore via IndieBound here.

6. Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy

“The film did an excellent job of representing the novel, with wonderful music and settings!” In addition, I think Keira Knightly was a fantastic Anna Karenina. “A very fantastic book and film.”

Purchase it at Amazon for $10 or more, Barnes & Noble for $5 or more, or a local bookstore through IndieBound here.

7. The Maze Runner series by James Dashner

“The films perfectly depicted the novel’s tensions and personalities.” To be honest, I couldn’t have asked for a finer cast.”

The whole collection is available through Amazon for $35.43+, Barnes & Noble for $26.03+, or a local bookstore via IndieBound here.

8. Everything is Illuminated by Jonathan Safran Foer

“The film brought the novel to life.” The actors who played each character were perfectly cast for their roles, and they portrayed the serious yet light-hearted book so well.”

Purchase it from Amazon for $5.30+, Barnes & Noble for $9.99+, or a local bookstore via IndieBound here.

9. The Help by Kathryn Stockett

“One of my favorite movies is The Help because it motivates me.” It demonstrates that no matter your age, skin color, sexual orientation, or whatever else, you can make a difference, and every difference counts, no matter how large or tiny.”

Purchase it from Amazon for $11.06+, Barnes & Noble for $11.15+, or a local bookstore via IndieBound here.

10. The Green Mile by Stephen King

“It’s one of Stephen King’s greatest works, and I think Frank Darabont did an excellent job directing it!”

Get it for $7.59+ on Amazon, $7.82+ on Barnes & Noble, or through a local bookseller through IndieBound here.
